Perfected in Love
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:46-48
This is quite the staggering thought, "be perfect...as your heavenly Father is perfect." A few thoughts. First, Jesus is speaking to becoming/being perfected in love. Love as he had, in part, just previously framed in verses 43-47 and, as we have heard Paul speak of love in 1 Cor. 13. We know, all too well, in our own personal lives, that this is not fully attainable in this life. However, we are not to despair. Rather, there is great hope, each and every day, for those who, submit (such a politically incorrect term in a culture steeped in self-grandiosity) in faith, to Christ to growing (being perfected) in our knowledge and love of God.
Another thought, this abiding hope and faith, is only made possible through grace - the Spirit's leading and directing in our lives.
Today, let's give up "our right" to be in control and "be responsive" as we embrace the truth, "the things that are impossible for man, are possible with God" Mark 10:27.
Have fun, be blessed!
