One Thing is Needed
But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:40-42
The monastic life has long held a fascination for me. Before I walked with Christ, it was the notion of study, discipline, and a philosophical outlook. Early in my journey with Jesus I couldn't help but to reflect, "surely the monastic life is really about distancing one's self from the trauma of everyday living in a world that seems so intent upon self-destructive behaviors."
Now, in reflection, I simply appreciate the words of Jesus to Martha, "one thing is needed". Whether one has embraced the more contemplative monastic life or the rigors of the slums of Calcutta or Kibera, "no greater love can be understood than to lose your life in Christ."
Loving and holy God I pray that all those who are seeking, all those who are suffering, all those who are feeling lost this day will suspend their right to doubt or disbelief and rest and be re-assured at the feet of the Savior...and the peace that surpasses all understanding will guard their hearts, minds, and spirits, in the name of Jesus…
