Working in Vain
Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to those he loves. Psalm 127:1–2
The spirit in which we undertake the task is more important than the task itself. This flies in the face of popular culture. We are taught "push, strive, make it happen." And, so we often do. Only to find that pride has silently crept in the back door and become a voice of authority yet once again in the halls of our soul.
The Holy Spirit will not force you deeper in the life of being a disciple of Christ. Many will become immune to the quiet still voice of the Lord through the strains of their own intense labor. Today, when faced with that "all too important task" will you allow it to be your master? Or, will you allow the Lord to be the cornerstone of your soul?
Most gracious God, let your Spirit be my spirit that my life will be like a river of living water poured out for others. Yesterday is gone, today is upon us, and tomorrow is of little concern. Teach us to live in the present moment with you that as we build, sow, and reap, others will know, or desire to know, the Prince of Peace that captains the very essence of our heart and soul. To this end we pray and live....in the name of Jesus.
